  Aug 21,  · The Microsoft Word app is not opening on my desktop. It shows up as a generic logo on the home screen and I cannot locate the file elsewhere. Word still works, but I have to access it from an existing file. All other Microsoft apps are opening correctly. · Hi, So you are not able to launch Microsoft Word by clicking on the application icon directly. First I right Clicked on WORD. Second I clicked the trouble shoot compatibility. I let it try to fix it and tested the settings. (that did not work) I hit next and checked a box about problem not being listed. Then I checked that Windows 8 was the last system it worked on instead of Windows 7. It redid the settings and now it works!!! Dec 30,  · As trying to start Word in Safe Mode has not helped, in the Windows search box type winword --> Word will be displayed --> right click on it --> Select Properties --> Go to the compatibility tab --> Check to see if there is a check mark next to compatibilty mode.
